Since 2019, the European Literature Festival Cologne-Kalk (eLk) has taken place in Kalk every year on the first weekend of September. What began as an exchange between literary practitioners from Cologne and Athens has grown into an established part of Kalk’s cultural landscape, supported by an expanding international network of authors, translators, curators, and an audience that becomes more diverse every year.

With its eighth edition, eLk is consciously taking a step further. Under the central theme of “Shame,” the festival is leaving its central square format for the first time and moving through the neighbourhood: places that represent thresholds for some people become spaces for encounter, literature, and collective reflection.

Shame accompanies us in our private lives just as much as in the political sphere. It reveals itself in gazes, memories, bodies, languages, and biographies. Literature opens up the possibility of speaking about shame without resolving it – of making it audible without defining it once and for all.

Over two weekends in September, ELK8 brings together authors, translators, German voices, moderators, and artists from across Europe at special locations throughout Cologne-Kalk. Readings, conversations, performances, and workshops invite audiences to discover new perspectives and engage in dialogue with one another.
